This was a study completed soon after the American red breasted nuthatch appeared in Holkham Pines in 1989. I was on the Isles of Scilly when it was first identified so we drove straight from Cornwall to Norfolk. The undergrowth at Holkham had been decimated by the thousands of birders that had already been to see this bird. I saw it several times that Winter but never better than drinking from the guttering on the old Summer house. I was keen to represent the quality of the pine wood using watercolor but concentrate on capturing the actual bird in gouache. The picture is not entirely successful but I will keep it as an experiment.
