Painting a local house in watercolour

I start by taking some photographs of the building I am going to paint. I this case it is an interesting local cottage which has a thatched roof.

Here is the photograph I am going to work from.


The balance of the photo is fine and it will work well in landscape. The day was a little overcast which is good in some ways as it means the colours are reasonably balanced and saturated but it also means we have little shadow which can make the picture uninteresting. The side of the house is lighter so we will focus on making the front a little darker to create depth and 3D solidity.
